Vancouver City Council has delayed making a decision on whether to put an additional 122 taxis on the road.
Council was set to vote on adding the extra taxi licenses on Tuesday.
But the vote was delayed after more than 80 drivers turned out to speak to issue.
Those drivers insist the recent economic downturn means 122 extra cabs on the road now will put many of them out of business. They admit more cabs are required, but want them added gradually.
"We're getting reports from large tour operators in the U.S. that maybe people are not going to be doing as many cruises as they thought,'' said John Palis of Black Top and Checker Cabs.
Palis said U.S. reports suggest there is potentially a large decline in traveling public coming to Vancouver in spite of the loonie going down.
Exactly how many more taxi licenses will be handed out will be decided after the upcoming civic election.
A CTV News investigation earlier this year revealed that Vancouver has significantly fewer taxis per capita than most other major Canadian cities.
