RICHMOND, B.C. -- An off-duty Mountie has appeared in a Richmond, B.C., courtroom to face drunk driving and hit-and-run charges in connection with a collision last year.
Const. Kulwant Singh Malhi is the fifth Metro Vancouver officer whose impaired driving charges have come to light in the last few months.
RCMP Sgt. Tim Shields says 41-year-old Malhi allegedly fled the scene after rear ending a vehicle in an unmarked police car in the early hours of Oct. 20, 2007.
Shields says a witness reported the accident to police before a second motorist called about an impaired driver on a Richmond highway.
He says the caller followed the car to Delta until it stopped in the driveway of a home, where police arrested the driver.
Malhi is currently suspended without pay and faces charges of impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
