The Burnaby mother stabbed to death near her home on Monday night appears to be the victim of domestic violence.

Uniformed officers found the 45-year-old woman lying in the road suffering multiple lacerations and stab wounds in the 6700-block of Elwell Street around 6:30 p.m.

The victim was transported to hospital but died a short time later.

Police took the woman's 24-year-old son into custody after canvassing witnesses at the scene. Mounties have not said what charges, if any, are expected.

"This homicide appears to be the direct result of a domestic dispute which sadly was witnessed by many in the neighbouhood" said Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

"This is an example of how volatile domestic disputes can be and the impact it can have on all those involved. This has impacted and changed a family forever."
