Dawson Creek RCMP are investigating a vandalism incident at a newly completed well site that caused over a million dollars worth of damage.
Police say vandals broke into the remote site near Stewart Lake over the weekend and appear to have spent a considerable amount of time damaging a lot of expensive equipment.
Two bulldozers, a CAT hoe track similar to an excavator, a heavy-duty rock truck and a compacter used to flatten large areas of dirt were among the equipment damaged.
The site operator of the well discovered the vandalism Monday morning. He told investigators the suspects buried the compactor in a large pile of dirt near the two bulldozers.
RCMP said it appeared the vandals were playing smash-up derby after they found the two giant rigs rammed together.
Although there have been other recent vandalisms in the area, including several high-profile pipeline explosions at EnCana natural gas sites, police do not believe the incident is connected to others.
Cpl. Mike Richard told ctvbc.ca that he believes it was a crime of opportunity.
"There's no reasoning for a vandalism like this. Right now there are no suspects but the investigation is still ongoing and we're hoping the public can help," he said.
