Health Canada has announced a voluntary recall of cribs made by a Richmond, B.C. company.

The agency says the cribs manufactured by Stork Craft over the last nine years meet safety standards, but metal support brackets used to support the mattress frame can crack if they are installed incorrectly.

"Our biggest concern is that perhaps this extraordinary stress that has been put on the odd bracket that has broken may have been caused by incorrect installation or incorrect taking apart of the crib where it has been bent back and forth several times which has caused some type of metal fatigue," explained Jim Moore, the President and CEO of Stork Craft

The agency says consumers should not return the cribs, but should contact Stork Craft to receive a free replacement kit with new support brackets.

"I think they should do that right away not only for their own piece of mind but for safety reasons to make sure. Sometimes people buy cribs second hand and they haven't always been in their control and just make sure there hasn't been any abuse or extraordinary pressure put on these brackets," recommended Moore.

The recall affects all Stork Craft cribs made between May, 2000 and November, 2008, with the manufacturing date displayed on the lower right hand corner of the instruction sheet which is glued on the mattress base.

If a support bracket breaks the mattress could collapse, leaving a gap between the mattress and crib rails in which a child could become trapped and suffocate.

Health Canada says it's had one complaint of a bracket breaking in Canada, 10 in the US but no one was hurt. The company is offering a heavier duty bracket to anyone who asks.

"If Consumers are concerned at all regardless of whether there is a cracked bracket or not is to go on our website and order a new set of brackets and we'll send them out to them," Moore pledged.

If you own one of these cribs, call the company toll-free at (866) 361-3321 or go to its website to order the free replacement kit.

Meanwhile, another Canadian crib, the Olympia 3-in-1 Crib by Dorel Canada, has also been recalled. Information on the latest recall can be seen here.
