A 39-year-old Surrey, B.C., man has died minutes after being taken into custody by Surrey RCMP.
Const. Peter Neily says the victim and a second man were reported to be dodging in and out of traffic on a busy Surrey street late Tuesday night.
When Mounties arrived, they only spotted the victim and took him into custody but say he went into medical distress almost immediately.
Although the man was rushed to hospital he could not be revived.
His name has not been released and Neily says it's too early to tell if he may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Members of the Vancouver Police Department have already taken over the case, under a new RCMP policy requiring all incidents of death or serious injury to be probed by an outside force.
