A man is dead and two others uninjured after the trio was caught in an avalanche while snowmobiling near Revelstoke Saturday, RCMP have confirmed.

Search and rescue crews were dispatched to the area Saturday afternoon, RCMP said.

It is unclear what triggered the avalanche on Boulder Mountain or exactly what time the incident happened.

On Saturday, the avalanche danger rating for the region was rated high for alpine and treeline areas and considerable for below-treeline areas., according to the Canadian Avalanche Centre.

The West Kootenay town is known for its surrounding snowmobile trails and Boulder Mountain is one of the most popular riding areas. It contains more than 50 kilometres of groomed trails and more than 150 square kilometres of alpine bowls and meadows, according to the website Sled Revelstoke.
