An electrical fire at a luxury Vancouver hotel caused gridlock on downtown streets for more than three hours Saturday night.

Guests at the Sutton Place Hotel were confined to their rooms as fire crews battled an electrical blaze in the underground parking garage.

Battalion chief Kelly Mullin says the blaze caused a lot of smoke and the gas had to be shut off which further affected hotel operations.

A jam of fire trucks, ambulances and police cars blocked traffic southbound on busy Burrard Street for many hours, forcing traffic to find another way around.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire and explosions, but they happened in an electrical room. None of the cars in the parkade were damaged.
