Police believe that the limousine driver who struck nine pedestrians in downtown Vancouver early Sunday morning was trying to avoid a man threatening his car with a traffic cone.

The pedestrians were hit while they stood on the sidewalk in the 1000-block of Davie Street around 2:30 a.m. They were taken to hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.

Vancouver police say that the limo driver became alarmed when he saw a man throwing things and damaging property before moving towards the car with a traffic cone in his hands.

The driver tried to move his limo out of the way, but his wheels were turned and the car mounted the sidewalk instead.

The alleged troublemaker, 22-year-old Calgary resident Kyle Allan Wugalter, was arrested after a short foot chase, and has now been charged with mischief and resisting arrest.

No decision has been made about any charges against the limo driver.
