ABBOTSFORD - Jason Jaffray had a hat trick as the Abbotsford Heat got past the Lake Erie Monsters 5-3 in American Hockey League action Saturday night.

Jaffray's second of the night, and 25th of the season, stood as the game winner as he redirected Staffan Kronwall's point shot past Lake Erie starter John Grahame late in the second.

"I had a couple opportunities in the first and second periods," said Jaffray, the game's first star. "Probably had four shots on goal before I got my first one. It just seemed like I was getting a lot of opportunities, getting a lot of shots on goal and it took an ugly tip-in to get it going."

Abbotsford led 2-1 after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Garth Murray and Kronwall. Tom Preissing was the only Monster to beat Heat starter Leland Irving.

The second period was an eventful one with the teams racking up a total of eight minor penalties.

The power-play opportunities created two of the second-period goals as the Heat entered the third up 5-2 thanks to Jaffray's hat trick. Ryan Stoa responded for Lake Erie picking up his 20th of the season.

"It's very important," said Heat head coach Jim Playfair of the team's pair of wins over Lake Erie. "We're trying to make the playoffs and we're in our first year in the league so it's important we make sure we're gathering points every day."

The Monsters quickly got on the board in the third as Preissing picked his second of the night with a blast from the point just over a minute in.

"When you take five penalties in the second you've got no chance -- to me that was the end of the game," said Monsters coach David Quinn. "We got the goal early in the third, it gave us a little bit of life, but we were just too tired.

"You never recover from all of that and we never did."

The penalty filled affair had the Monsters finish 2-for-8 with the man advantage while the Heat went 2-for-9 on the power play.

"It's huge, for us to be able to come out with four points and only give (Lake Erie) one," said Jaffray of the pair of wins after the Heat beat the Monsters 3-2 Friday. "Obviously last night we kind of slipped there a bit in the third period, but we won it in a shootout.

"It's been a while since we swept two home games in a row and it feels good."

Starting his second game since being recalled, Irving made 21 saves for his 13th win. Grahame made 23 saves for his 14th loss of the season.
