Mounties are investigating after human remains were found off Capilano Road in North Vancouver Saturday.

Police said the body was discovered by a local resident around 6 p.m. near a trail off Curling Road and Belle Isle Place, but could not give information about its sex, age or how long it had been there.

Cpl. Doug Trousdell said police haven't ruled out foul play and the discovery is being considered suspicious.

Paul Murphy, who lives next to the crime scene, said he often sees suspicious activity around the neighbourhood and that homeless people are often in the wooded area where the remains were found.

“There are police here all the time,” he said. “There is some (traffic) and of course the old big site that’s been sitting there derelict for 20 years... attracts some homeless people.”

Murphy told CTV News he began noticing a nasty odour a couple days ago.

“You can smell it a bit now, it comes in whiffs,” he added.

Murphy was also troubled by the gruesome discovery being so close to home.

“It’s kind of disconcerting,” he said. “Obviously, it’s just one of the things that happens. It’s not like it happens every month or every year, but still it’s not pleasant.”

The North Vancouver RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are investigating.
