An avalanche closed down a stretch of Highway 99 - also known as Duffey Lake Road - for hours Tuesday morning.
The slide, about 45 kilometres north of Pemberton, measured 12 metres deep and 25 metres long - the result of warmer weather and a lot of rain.
There were no reports of any injury.
The Sea-to-Sky Highway has undergone major upgrades. Drainage is improved. Bridges have been built stronger and higher to prevent washouts and to survive the most severe floods.
But the threat of landslides remains.
Last year, the road to Whistler was closed for days when thousands of cubic metres of debris tumbled down near Porteau Cove.
Areas are being shored up with mesh cages at some of the most vulnerable spots identified by experts.
But these steps will prevent only minor slides - they can't stop major ones on the road the world will depend on during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.
