It's the sport that defines a high school and headlines school papers: football.

Football is the highlight sport for many Vancouver high schools and the players on the team become High School Heroes.

But behind every great player and every great team is an even better coach. Notre Dame Regional Secondary School's coach, George Oswald, has seen more than 1,500 players and 14 championships in 45 years.

"The juices flow when football comes around," said Oswald, who acts as Notre Dame's football coach and vice principal.

He has seen and coached scores of talent over the years and he never tires of his job.

"A lot of them [players] come back and watch us play," said Oswald.

He is proud to see how the young boys he coached have flourished into successful men and citizens.

The players to grace Oswald's rosters include former premier Glen Clark and one the CFL's greatest kickers Lui Passaglia.

Oswald owns a long list of successes and titles, but he does not hold the title for oldest coach on the team.

Coach Bill Cole has been a constant on the sidelines, dating as far back as when Oswald was playing football. Cole coached Oswald in 1966 and confirms Oswald was an excellent quarterback when he was in grade 12.

The game has changed since then, but the pair still loves everything about it.

The players and students may have changed over the last 40 years, but the core message has stayed the same: bring out the playbook, see eye-to-eye and win games.

At the end of the game, the boys and both coaches stay friends. They are a team that plays, wins and loses together.

Cole insists that even after 40 years of coaching the game keeps him young and on his toes.

"It's just a game," said Coach Cole. "What you learn playing the game is most important."
