Police in Chilliwack, B.C., say they have uncovered a small marijuana grow-op inside the home of an elderly man who was shot during a violent home invasion.
Police say the 72-year-old was threatened by a man with a handgun when he answered a knock at the door about 6 p.m. Tuesday.
After a brief struggle, police say the suspect stabbed the senior and shot him.
The suspect ran away. Despite efforts to track the man with police dogs, he could not be located.
Members of the RCMP Integrated Forensic Identification Services conducted a sweep of the home for any evidence, and discovered a small marijuana grow operation cleverly concealed inside the home.
Mounties say they believe the suspect intended to target the home and hope members of the public will be to give them more information.
"Even seemingly small information can prove to be very valuable," Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said in a statement.
The victim remains in stable condition in hospital.
It is not believed the crime is linked to organized crime or gangs.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
