The B.C. Liberals have nominated their newest star candidate.
Entrepreneur and former Vancouver Canucks owner Arthur Griffiths officially accepted the provincial Liberal nomination Wednesday night for the upcoming by-election in Vancouver-Burrard.
Premier Gordon Campbell attended Griffiths' nomination, saying the former hockey franchise owner has affected thousands of lives in the province through his work in creating the Canuck Place children's hospice.
A date for the by-election has not been set.
It will be the last election in the downtown-area riding because Vancouver-Burrard will be split in time for the May provincial election -- creating two new ridings, Vancouver-West End and Vancouver-False Creek.
The nomination comes at a time when polls show the B.C. Liberals sliding in popularity among British Columbians.
The Vancouver-Burrard riding was left vacant after Lorne Mayencourt made the jump to federal politics, where he is running as a conservative.
