White Rock Mounties are appealing for a driver to come forward after he struck and killed a woman in front of her friend on Wednesday night.

The 56-year-old woman was walking through the marked intersection at Thrift Avenue and Johnson Road around 10:30 p.m. when she was hit. Her friend was uninjured.

The victim died at the scene from her injuries.

RCMP say officers were pursuing the 1992 red Nissan Maxima on Johnson Road with the cruiser's sirens on after the driver failed to pull over for a traffic stop.

"The suspect vehicle failed to respond to the direction of the officer and continued northbound on Johnston Road at a high rate of speed," said Sgt. Peter Thiessen.

Police say the Nissan sideswiped a car and passed another vehicle before colliding with the pedestrian.

The Nissan was found abandoned in the area of 160 Street and King George Highway in Surrey a short time later.

White Rock RCMP seized the vehicle and forensic members are now conducting an investigation.

Police are now asking the driver to come forward and take responsibility for the fatal crash.

"'We have dedicated significant resources to this investigation, and our police officers are focused on finding and arresting the driver," said Thiessen.

The Vancouver Police Department will oversee an independent investigation of the file, he added.

(Editor's note: Police mistakenly identified the person walking with the victim as her daughter. The error has been corrected.)
