Vancouver police say crowds were well behaved as Team USA lit up the sky on the first night of the city's annual Celebration of Light fireworks display.

Several hundred thousand people lined beaches around English Bay on Wednesday night for the start of the four night event.

Police report two batons, a can of bear spray, 17 bottles of liquor and nine drug stashes were seized, 280 bottles or cans of alcohol were dumped and four people were arrested for public drunkenness.

But Const. Jana McGuinness says the only notable incident was on the water as the police department's marine unit checked a 40 foot boat packed with 35 people.

She says the boat owner was co-operative when ordered to return to shore because of concerns about a lack of stability, overloading and not enough life jackets.

The Celebration of Light continues at 10 p.m. on Saturday as Team Spain demonstrates its latest pyrotechnic artistry with a theme entitled Hell and Heaven.
