A troublesome lighting storm didn't stop the Celebration of Light fireworks competition from going ahead on Saturday night. But it did halt a number of other Lower Mainland events, including a Vancouver Whitecaps soccer game, and a music festival in Burnaby.
Over 2,608 BC Hydro customers in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast were also left without power on Saturday.
Lightning also started a number of forests fires in the B.C. Interior, including one near Salmon Arm, where several people were evacuated.
But back in Vancouver, it was business as usual for the HSBC Celebration of Light fireworks competition.
As bolts of lightning flashed across the sky, 300,000 enthusiasts converged on English Bay to watch South Africa take its turn.
Canada kicked off the annual competition on Wednesday, which proved to be a relatively trouble-free evening.
On Saturday, police were hoping that people would once again focus on enjoying the show and take public transit in and out of the West End area.
