A 43-year-old soccer fan is facing criminal charges after allegedly lighting a marine flare inside BC Place during Saturday’s Whitecaps FC match.

Police say the Vancouverite lit the flare in the second-level seating area and put it under an unoccupied seat.

Security guards rushed in to extinguish the flames but some nearby fans suffered breathing difficulties.

One woman was taken to hospital for further treatment and was later released.

After being located by security he was arrested by Vancouver police.

He now faces charges of mischief, criminal negligence and common nuisance. He is expected to make a court appearance Monday.
