RCMP have confirmed that the driver who died in a head-on collision on Highway 99 Tuesday was an elderly woman, and that she was driving in the wrong lane.

Sgt. Peter Thiessen says the driver, who is believed to be in her 80s, would have been driving into oncoming traffic for several minutes.

"She got on at Highway 10, and she was going southbound in the northbound lane," Thiessen said. "And the final crash happened south of the Highway 91 overpass."

Two separate collisions were reported during rush hour Tuesday evening, one kilometre away from each other. At least one person was airlifted to hospital, and Thiessen confirmed that the elderly driver died at the scene.

Four ambulances were called to the scene of one accident. A number of other damaged vehicles, including a truck and a black SUV were located nearby.

More information is expected to be released at an RCMP press conference scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
