A motorist, who was driving the wrong way, may have caused two separate collisions that shut down Highway 99 near the Surrey-Delta border during rush hour on Tuesday evening.

Three people were injured -- two of them seriously -- and at least person was airlifted to hospital. There are unconfirmed reports that one person has died.

Two vehicles were involved in each crash. They occurred about one kilometer away from each other on Hwy. 99 near the junction of Hwy. 91.

A witness says he had to swerve to miss a car that was driving on the wrong side of the road near where the accidents occurred. It is not clear at this time which accident that car may have caused.

Four ambulances were called to the scene of one accident.

At supper time on Tuesday, chopper video of the scene showed paramedics performing CPR on one victim near a badly damaged green sedan. The sedan was sitting on the grass median between the north and south lanes of Hwy. 99.

Early indications are that efforts to revive the injured person may not have succeeded. A number of other damaged vehicles, including a truck and a black SUV, were located nearby.
