Daycare operator charged with manslaughter of baby

The operator of an unlicensed Coquitlam daycare has now been charged with manslaughter in connection to the sudden death of a baby boy under her care.

Maria McFerran was already facing charges of criminal negligence causing death, failing to provide necessaries and obstructing justice after the one-year-old died on Jan. 17, 2011. The manslaughter charge was approved last week.

The accused woman was the operator of "Rattle N' Roll Daycare," which has no record of a business licence. In a Craiglist ad for the business, she boasted of having 22 years' experience.

McFerran appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court Thursday and is scheduled to have an arraignment hearing on Apr. 5.
