A young couple ended a first date having to be rescued from Grouse Mountain.

Twenty-four-year-old Kazuki Toyoda had taken the gondola to the top with his 19-year-old date Saturday afternoon.

"We have been looking for the lake,” said Toyoda. “We got lost.”

North Shore Rescue Search Manager Jim Loree said he didn’t know what lake the couple was trying to get to, adding the pair was not familiar with the mountain.

“Just really, really unprepared and not knowledgeable of the terrain at all,” he said.

The couple ended up lost in very steep and difficult terrain, according to North Shore Rescue.

Crews were able to hike the pair out at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

At the base of the mountain, Kazuki Toyota expressed his gratitude to those who saved them.

“Thank you so much,” he said. “Nice job.”

So far North Shore Rescue has responded to 118 calls for help this year - an unprecedented amount. They average about 90 to100 calls for the entire year.

Rescue crews are once again urging anyone heading into the back country to take precautions.

As for the couple, crews said both were in good shape. The shape of their relationship is not so clear, according to Loree.

“I don’t think that’s a good first date at all," he said.

No word yet if a second date is in the works.
