Conservation officers have combed B.C.'s Alice Lake Provincial Park with hounds for several days but haven't been able to track down a cougar that chased several mountain bikers earlier in the week.

The park remains closed as the hunt continues, but Peter Busink with B.C.'s Environment Ministry says they're sure the aggressive cat wasn't in the park as of Wednesday.

He says the officers will take the dogs back in again on Friday and if there's still no sightings they'll reopen the trails.

On Sunday, the cougar stalked three different groups of mountain bikers who all fended off the creature by standing their ground and making themselves appear the bigger threat.

Busink says it's an unusual change in behaviour for the female feline, which has been spotted previously in the area over the past 10 years but only now presents a danger to the public.

Should the dogs find the animal, Busink says they would chase it up a tree and a conservation officer would take the necessary steps to destroy it.
