The driver in an early morning crash that killed two young people and seriously injured three others in Burnaby, B.C., has been charged with 10 criminal offenses.
Seven people were inside a vehicle leaving Olympic festivities in downtown Vancouver around 1 a.m. Saturday when their car flipped at Willingdon and Still Creek Avenue. Police say the five-seat sedan carrying seven people lost control, struck a light standard, flipped in the air and rolled.
Two New Westminster residents, aged 18 and 20, died at the scene. Three others -- a 20-year-old man from New Westminster, and two 19-year-old girls -- were taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. They remain in hospital in critical condition.
The driver and a young Burnaby woman, 19, escaped injury.
Baldip Chandi, 19, has been charged with three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired driving causing death, and five counts of dangerous driving.
He will appear in court on Monday.
Douglas College student Ferdie Carrion, 18, of New Westminster, was identified by family members Saturday as one of the two victims.
Sister Cory Carrion told ctvbc.ca her younger brother was a "family guy" with a "big heart."
"As the Olympics come to a close and the world is celebrating the senseless loss of these young lives is a solemn reminder to plan ahead for a safe ride home," Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk said in a statement issued to media Sunday.
Police said they believe speed is a factor in the crash.
