A father and son are lucky to be alive after a car theft attempt outside their home turned ugly.
It happened around 10:30 p.m., Tuesday on 113th Avenue in Maple Ridge. RCMP say the men noticed the suspect trying to break into their van. When the two went outside to confront the suspect, he produced pepper spray and a knife, and stabbed both the owner and the son.
"The son noticed the car being broke into and apparently there were a bunch of other cars on the street broke into as well... and that's when they went outside and the guy had pepper sprayed them both and stabbed them both," says neighbour Christy Gelowitz who heard the commotion outside.
Gelowitz says she was alerted to the incidence when she heard a person yelling for someone to call 911.
Both victims were taken to hospital with stab wounds. The suspect was held at the scene with the help of two neighbours. The 29 year old suspect sustained some injuries, and had to be taken to the Royal Columbian Hospital for treatment.
He has been identified as Kenneth Scott Wright. He appeared in court today, and was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Police are recommending further charges of theft, and possession of a weapon for a a dangerous purpose. Wright was released on parole in December last year. Police say his parole will be revoked once these new charges are dealt with.
Although the suspect was caught, police are warning people not to try to confront criminals.
The condition of the father and son is not known at this time.
