Mounties have arrested a suspect who allegedly stole a car in Kelowna, B.C., before fleeing on foot and hiding from police in the basement of a home.

Officers were called to reports of a stolen vehicle in the 1000 block of Highway 33 Dec.12, Kelowna RCMP said in a release issued Friday.

The suspect was found still inside the car, but became aggressive and fled on foot when an officer approached, police said.

Officers using police dogs followed the man to a home in the 400 block of Lester Road. Calls for the suspect to leave the premises were ignored, and officers waited, containing the home, until a warrant was issued and approved.

Once approved, the officers searched the home and found the man, a 35-year-old already known to police, hiding in the basement.

“This was excellent work by our frontline officers with support of PDS to track and locate this suspect,” says Insp. Jason Charney, in the release.
