The owner of Captain -- the two-year-old German Shepherd who died after being found badly injured in a Kitsilano dumpster a week ago -- was arrested Wednesday on an unrelated charge of criminal harassment, according to police.
A search warrant related to the animal cruelty investigation into Captain's death and obtained by CTV News identifies him as Brian Whitlock, and reveals several disturbing details of the case.
The document indicates when police searched Whitlock’s apartment, they observed piles of dog feces, a Swiss Army Knife, baseball bat and a heavy chain.
A neighbour told CTV News Whitlock walked Captain with a heavy chain and that loud banging noises were heard in the suite last Tuesday night.
“It was really terrible, I mean I could hear it out here… it sounded like somebody was ripping the walls out… and I didn’t do anything,” Curtis Penn said.
The warrant says Whitlock’s mother told the SPCA’s Cruelty Investigations team her son had owned Captain for two months before the dog was found in a dumpster in the 1400-block of Maple Street.
The shocking case spurred an online donation drive that has so far raised $66,546 in support of the SPCA’s animal cruelty investigations.
Meanwhile, a vigil has been planned for Captain at 7 p.m. Wednesday near the tennis courts at Kitsilano Beach, blocks from where the dog was found. Attendees are encouraged to bring their pets and candles.
