Hockey fans took over the streets of downtown Vancouver in jubilation Tuesday after the Canucks downed the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 7 finale of the Western Conference Stanley Cup quarterfinals.

Traffic was shut down on the Granville Street mall and Robson Street as hockey lovers left Rogers Arena and downtown sports bars and created a giant street party.

Cars were barely moving near the arena because the throngs of screaming and cheering fans were so thick. Thousands of people cheering "We want the Cup" waved towels and hollered as they moved down the Granville corridor.

Some are comparing the Canucks Nation roar on downtown streets to the Canadian victory against the Americans in the 2010 Olympic Games hockey final.

Festivities were happy and safe say police, albeit quite loud.

In Surrey, police shut down the intersection of Scott Road and 72nd Street after more than 1,000 people gathered there to show their support for the team.

Things did appear to get rowdier in the suburb, with one man burning a Blackhawks jersey while people chanted "F*** the Hawks."

Surrey Mounties said festivities remained peaceful otherwise.
