Canada Post is warning consumers about a virus-ridden email circulating around the country that may compromise people's personal information.
The email, which uses the Canada Post logo, tells customers they've missed a package delivery and urges them to follow several links to obtain their tracking codes.
The official-looking notice says, "The delivery attempt failed because no one was present at the shipping address, so this notification was automatically sent. Canada Post Corporation."
Canada Post said it never sends personal emails, unless you've sent a traceable parcel and specifically requested an email notification.
Spokesman John Caines says criminals are taking advantage of the Christmas season when parcel volumes are at their heaviest.
"If you get this email delete it or call police -- or both," he said Friday.
One CTV viewer said that when he opened the link in the fraudulent email he was directed to six pages of complicated computer code that "didn't make sense."
A similar Canada Post email scam circulating earlier this year allegedly was able to track people's online banking information once they opened the link.
Caines could not say whether this latest email scam was connected. He said customers should not respond to the fraudulent solicitation.
