Mounties on Vancouver Island have confirmed the burnt body found on a trail earlier this month is missing Duncan, B.C., resident Karrie Ann Stone.

Stone's badly burnt body was found by a berry picker in an isolated wooded area in Glenora, a small enclave southwest of Duncan.

Stone's mother reported her 42-year-old daughter missing just two hours before the grim discovery. She was last seen on July 7 at the Super 8 Motel – locally dubbed "The Grand."

Stone was positively identified through DNA analysis on Tuesday and investigators are treating her death as a homicide. Her family has been notified.

Cpl. Darren Lagan said members of the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and the Duncan RCMP General Investigation Section are now trying to identify a suspect.

"Progress has been made, yet many questions remain unanswered," he wrote in a statement.

Poilce are appealing for anyone with information about Stone's murder to contact investigators.
