Police believe that the burnt body found on Vancouver Island on Monday could belong to a missing Duncan woman, and they are now investigating the case as a murder.
RCMP Cpl. Darren Lagan told ctvbc.ca that autopsy results confirm the body belongs to a woman who met with foul play. They have not identified any suspects.
Although investigators have not yet determined the woman's identity, police say they are dedicating significant resources to the case of a missing 42-year-old Duncan woman named Karrie Ann Stone.
Stone's mother reported her daughter missing on Monday, two hours after a berry picker found the charred body on a trail in a heavily wooded area in Glenora, an enclave southwest of Duncan.
Stone was last seen on the evening of July 7 at the Super 8 Motel – locally dubbed "The Grand" – near the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway and Allenby Road in Duncan.
She is Caucasian, with dark brown hair and blue eyes. She wears prescription glasses, weighs about 195 pounds and is 5-2 tall.
Investigators say they have information causing them to believe the body found belonged to Stone, but because they have not yet confirmed its identity they will keep following other possible leads.
