A berry picker on Vancouver Island made a gruesome discovery on Monday afternoon, when they discovered a burnt body on a trail in a densely wooded area.
The body was found near Elliott Road in Glenora, an enclave southwest of Duncan, around 3:30 p.m.
Police believe that the body was burned at the scene, but have not determined its identity, age, gender or cause of death. However, foul play is suspected.
Island District RCMP Cpl. Darren Lagan said the body appears to belong to an adult.
He told ctvbc.ca that police have not determined when the body was burned, but believe that it happened within the last several weeks.
"At this point the investigators have described this as recent," Lagan said. "It's not historical."
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
This is the third time in less than four months that unidentified burnt human remains have been found in southern Vancouver Island.
On March 19, the badly burned body of 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor was discovered near the Galloping Goose Trail in Colwood, west of Victoria.
After a three-month investigation, two teenaged boys were charged with first-degree murder, forcible confinement, sexual assault and indignity to human remains in her death.
Lagan said that police do not believe there is any connection between this latest discovery and Proctor's death.
"There's absolutely nothing to indicate that this discovery is related to that incident," he said.
In the third recent case, firefighters discovered a burnt body inside a car in Langford on April 27. That death was later determined to be a suicide.
