One of the twin girls critically injured in a Surrey apartment fire earlier this week has succumbed to her injuries.

Twenty-month-old Ava and Samantha Keddie were rushed to hospital on Tuesday with burns to large portions of their bodies after a fire broke out in their bedroom.

Ava died shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday. Samantha remains at the BC Children's Hospital, where she is listed in critical but stable condition.

The Keddie family issued the following statement Saturday morning:

"It is with sad and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ava Elizabeth Keddie. Ava passed away January 8, 2011 at 12:40am with her Mommy and Daddy at her side.

Ava is greatly missed by her Mommy, Daddy, Sissy Samantha, big brother Jayden, Nanny, Poppy, Grandmama, Papa, Granny, Opa, and her many aunts and uncles. The family would like to thank the incredible staff in ICU at Children's Hospital, and express their gratitude for all the prayers.

Please continue to pray for our darling Samantha. The family is now requesting privacy to mourn the loss of their sweet Ava."

Fire crews believe the blaze was sparked when the light bulb of a lamp came into contact with some bedding in the twins' room.

The girls' mother and three-year-old brother were also home when the fire broke out and were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

A trust fund has been set up for the twins at Coast Capital Savings. Anyone interested in donating can visit any branch and say they are interested in supporting "Ava and Samantha in Trust."
