B.C. travellers hoping to catch a ferry between Vancouver Island and the Mainland over the busy Thanksgiving long weekend may face a snag in their plans.

A fire in the generator of the Spirit of Vancouver Island, one of the largest vessels in the BC Ferries fleet, has forced cancellation of its sailings at least until this afternoon.

The ship was docked at Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island and no passengers were aboard when the fire occurred early Friday morning.

BC Ferries says no one was hurt and crew members quickly smothered the flames, using the ferry's onboard fire suppression system.

Damage to the ship is being assessed.

The 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. sailings from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen and the 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sailings from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay have been cancelled.
