The Vancouver Police Department says a 44-year-old assault convict believed to have breached his parole conditions was arrested in Burnaby, B.C., Saturday night.

Nicholas William Patterson was located in the 3400-block of Willingdon Avenue just after 7 p.m. by Mounties.

Patterson was recently released after serving time for nine random assaults on women in Vancouver's downtown core dating back to August 2009.

Police say he approached the women, sometimes claiming to be from San Francisco, and asked for money. When they didn't respond, he slapped them.

Patterson's parole conditions require he stay out of downtown Vancouver.

On Wednesday night, a woman told police she was approached by a man matching Patterson's description in the 600-block of Howe Street.

"She wasn't assaulted, but she was approached and a man said to her that he was from San Francisco," McGuinness said.

Vancouver police are now making arrangements to have Patterson brought into their custody.
