The 16-year-old Kelowna girl charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a schoolmate at a house party has been granted bail.

More than 150 people attended the bail hearing at the Kelowna Law Courts Tuesday afternoon. Extra special security precautions, including extra RCMP officers and security, were put in place for the emotional crowd.

Ashlee Hyatt, 16, was stabbed to death outside a teenage drinking party in Peachland on June 2.

The accused, whose identity is protected because of her age, has been ordered to remain at her residence 24 hours a day. Her parents posted two bonds worth $10,000 for her release.

There was a lot of disappointment in the decision from the victim's supporters, but her father accepts it.

"I guess I have to put myself in their position," Greg Hyatt told CTV News. "As long as she's out and not able to move around the community."

Hyatt's mother, Charrie, said the accused's parents are very lucky.

"They get to get up in the morning and kiss her. We don't get to kiss our daughter. I don't understand," she said, breaking down into tears.

Charrie told CTV News it was a single slash to the neck with an X-acto knife that killed her daughter. She died on the street outside the house party.

The accused is scheduled to be back in court in two weeks to fix a trial date.

Under court imposed conditions, she is prohibited from using Facebook and other social-networking sites, consuming drugs or alcohol. She must also stay away from an area high school and 19 people considered witnesses in the case.
