A man who witnessed a crash under the Granville Street Bridge early Monday morning believes the driver was excessively speeding before losing control.

Police said the vehicle was travelling on West 4th Avenue near Anderson Street at around 4 a.m., when the driver lost control and struck a light pole. It appeared that the white car had rolled at least once before hitting the pole.

Two passengers were ejected from the vehicle, while the driver was trapped inside. The driver had to be extracted by Vancouver firefighters, then all three were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, but said that speed and alcohol are being considered as factors at the time. People who saw the crash say it looked like the car took the turn too fast.

"I saw this car coming, must have been 160, 180 – its tires were screeching around the corner," a man who identified himself as Spirit told CTV News.

"Saw the pole in the rear-view mirror start to teeter over after the accident."

The intersection remains closed as police continue their investigation.
