After controversy plagued Vancouver’s first bike lanes, city hall is looking to add more routes for cyclists and pedestrians on two bridges.
The city has issued a request for a feasibility study to add lanes to the Granville Street Bridge and Cambie Bridge.
The study, expected in the next couple months, will examine the potential cost and impact of the expansions.
City council will also hold a public hearing on the issue.
The city’s existing bike lanes caused controversy after businesses on Dunsmuir and Hornby streets complained the lanes negatively impacted their businesses. Businesses said turning restrictions and the lack of parking deterred customers.
But after the separated bike lanes were put in place on Hornby Street, an independent review found there was just a moderate economic impact and fewer business locations were standing vacant.
More bike lanes could also be coming to Commercial Drive, Cornwall Avenue and Point Grey Road by summer 2013, the city announced in May.
