Facing hot and dry conditions, authorities in Tofino, B.C., are stepping up efforts to conserve water in the Vancouver Island tourist resort town.

Residents are under orders from the District of Tofino not to water lawns, wash their vehicles and fill hot tubs or pools.

If water consumption in the area is not significantly reduced by these 'stage two' restrictions, the District office is threatening to impose even tighter regulations in the near future.

Residents and businesses have been asked not consume any water between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., except where absolutely necessary, to allow the reservoirs to refill during those critical hours.

As well, commercial tourism businesses that rely on outdoor water use are encouraged to fill outdoor cisterns between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and to use this water for outdoor uses.

Large users in the tourism sector, meanwhile, have been told to record daily water meter readings, and provide a report of water usage, occupancy rates, and expected future visitor numbers to the Superintendent of Public Works.
