May 18 update: The victim has been identified as Kennith King-Lok Leung of Vancouver. No arrests have been made.

Detectives from the VPD’s Major Crimes Section are investigating after a man known to police was shot to death in a quiet West Side neighbourhood.

Police responded to the 500-block of West 27th Avenue after receiving multiple reports of shots fired around 10:30 p.m. Monday night.

Officers arrived to find a silver SUV perched on the sidewalk and a man inside suffering gunshot wounds. The 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is focused on the SUV and dozens of evidence markers have been placed on the ground.

Costas Vira was putting his 87-year-old mother to bed when he heard rapid-fire automatic gunfire.

"My mom gets up and she goes 'I'm scared, what's going on?' I say it's the people next door hammering. I come outside, I walk around the corner, there's a white SUV, windows are all bullet-holed and it's up on the sidewalk," Vira said.

Sgt. Randy Fincham said the force is treating the murder as a targeted homicide.

The crime marks Vancouver’s third homicide of 2016, and the force is appealing ot the public for information about the crime.
