Police in Surrey are searching for a hit-and-run driver after a man and woman were struck and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Crews rushed to 72nd Avenue and 130th Street at around 9 p.m. Sunday after a driver plowed into a couple trying to cross the street at a marked intersection and then fled, according to police.

The couple, a 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman, was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where they remained Monday morning with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect vehicle is described as a white or light-coloured car, possibly a Mazda, likely with front-end damage.

Witnesses say the car was travelling northbound on 130th Street when it hit the two pedestrians, before turning eastbound onto 72nd Avenue.

Surrey RCMP are asking any witnesses who have not come forward to call them at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
