Hikers are being warned to stay away from a number of trails on the North Shore after a tumbling wall of granite the size of a house partially blocked the upper Seymour river Sunday.
The slide happened near Twin Bridges, a popular hiking trail off Riverside Drive. Thousands of tonnes of rock in Seymour canyon tumbled down a 70-metre cliff iinto the river, creating a partial dam.
The resulting backup of water almost reached the trails of the Twin Bridges, according to officials.
"Some of the rocks are house-size," said Mike Mayers of Metro Vancouver Water Services. "The river has found a flow overtop, so it seems to be quite stable at this point."
Mayers reiterated there is no risk to public safety or threat of flooding.
The city has shut down a number of surrounding trails, including Twin Bridges, Fisherman's and Homestead trails, and is warning hikers to stay away.
No injuries or damage to homes have been reported.
