A man is in custody and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is searching for answers after the suspicious death of a 14-month-old baby in Chilliwack Friday night.

Officers were called to a home at 46330 Mullins Road in Chilliwack’s Promontory area just after 10 p.m. Friday night.

They found a baby girl who appeared to be in medical distress, according to IHIT.

She was taken to hospital, and after all attempts at reviving her failed, she was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m.

A man has since been arrested and taken into custody but no charges have yet been laid, IHIT spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Pound said.

Officials suspect foul play in the infant’s death and an autopsy will be required to determine her cause of death, Pound said.

Further details about the relationship between the arrested man and the baby girl have not been released, but in a news conference Saturday, Pound said the child's parents are grieving.

“I can tell you [the mother] just found out her 14-month-old baby has died, so understandably the parents are distraught about this. I can’t go into a lot of detail about that, but it’s their only child so they’re trying to deal with this and process it as best they can,” she said.

Neighbours told CTV News that the lone occupant of the house is a woman in her late 30s who has lived there for the last two to three years.

Several neighbours said no children lived in the house with the woman. She was possibly on disability and got rides to appointments with her own mother, who might’ve co-owned the house with her, they said.

No further arrests are expected in the case.
