The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died near Lake Cowichan Wednesday as Gregory Thomas Howlett of Duncan, B.C.

Howlett, 52, died after a rock fell from a logging truck and crashed through the windshield of a truck on Highway 18 near Lake Cowichan Wednesday morning.

Vancouver Island RCMP said two commercial logging trucks were travelling on the highway at around 9:30 a.m. when a rock fell from one of them, bounced off the road and entered the driver's side windshield of a pick-up truck.

Howlett was seriously injured and later died in hospital. A female passenger was not injured.

The driver of the logging truck did not stop at the scene and police believe the person may be unaware of the incident.

Police are working to identify both drivers and logging trucks connected to the incident.
