A 53-year-old man has been charged in an alleged homophobic attack at B.C. MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert’s Vancouver constituency office last month.

Crown has approved counts of assault and mischief under $5,000 against Michael Melvin Williams, police confirmed Monday.

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 4.

Chandra Herbert, an openly gay man, said a riding resident stormed into his office on Feb. 21 to complain about rainbow flags flying there and outside a local community centre.

The man allegedly demanded to see the NDP MLA, punched a hole in his office door, then punched his constituency assistant in the face.

Police arrested a suspect, whom they described as intoxicated, just down the street from the office a short time later.
