Firefighters were called to an industrial area of Abbotsford Thursday morning after a large blaze broke out at a rubber plant.

Dozens of rubber mats went up in flames at a property near McCallum Road and the Abbotsford-Mission Highway shortly before 10 a.m., sending huge plumes of black smoke into the air.

Police said the haze was so bad it was affecting traffic.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and it doesn’t appear that any neighbouring businesses have been affected.

The fire appears to have started at North West Rubber, a mat manufacturer with plants in B.C., Ontario, Beijing, and several U.S. states.
