An East Vancouver man has died after being shot by police during an altercation on Saturday evening.

Police say they received a 911 call shortly before 5 p.m. regarding a distraught man who was standing at the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Knight Street, shouting and waving a 2x4 wooden board.

The 51-year-old man confronted police and refused to listen to direction, according to authorities.

Attempts to disarm the man with less-lethal beanbag rounds failed and the man was eventually shot with bullets by police.

One witness said officers fired several rounds when they were within about two metres of the suspect.

The still-unidentified man was rushed to hospital but did not survive.

B.C.'s police watchdog – the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) – is investigating the incident.

No officers were hurt during the incident.
