Vernon Mounties are investigating after a firefighter sent to douse a bush party bonfire was struck by a suspected drunk driver Wednesday night.

The volunteer firefighter was on foot approaching a frequent outdoor party spot along Hartnell Road when he was run down by a pickup truck at around 10 p.m.

RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk said a 26-year-old suspect was held at the scene.

“A second fireman coming in with a vehicle blocked the road and stopped the individual from getting away,” Molendyk said. “Indications were that this person was under the influence.”

The firefighter was taken to hospital, treated for minor injuries and released. Molendyk said the victim is going to be sore for a few days from bumps and bruises, but nothing serious.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to the local RCMP detachment and given a breathalyzer test. Mounties say he’s facing impairment-related charges.

He was released from custody on a promise to appear in court on Aug. 29.
