A 48-year-old woman is facing impaired driving charges after a longboarder was struck and killed by an SUV in Abbotsford, B.C., Saturday night.

Police say the 29-year-old victim was heading northbound on Dunsmuir Way at around 10 p.m. when he was hit by an eastbound Ford Expedition.

"There was some liquor seized from the SUV," Sgt. Casey Vinet said.

The longboarder died at the scene before paramedics arrived. Police say he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

"Whether we are motorists, pedestrians, skateboards or cyclists we are all vulnerable and have to keep that in mind," Vinet said.

The driver pulled over after the accident and stayed at the scene.

The Abbotsford Police Department patrol division, a collision analyst and the B.C. Coroner Service are investigating the crash.

Part of the investigation will focus on whether the longboarder made an attempt to halt at a stop sign at the intersection, Vinet said.

The victim's family has been notified. They chose not to release his name at this time.
